Since July 2003, Karl-Heinz Altmann has been Professor of Pharmaceutical Biology at the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zürich. Prof. Karl-Heinz Altmann serves as a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Nextech Venture Ltd. Prof. Altmann serves as a Member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Board of Speedel Pharma AG since January 2005. Prof. Altmann consults several companies.
From 1990 to 1996, he worked at Ciba-Geigy Central Research Laboratories in Basel. Formerly, Prof. Altmann was a Senior Scientific Expert Chemistry and Global Head at Discovery Chemistry. He was a Project Leader in Oncology Research with Novartis Pharma AG from 1997 to 2000. In 2000, Prof. Altmann was appointed as the Head of Novartis Scientific Chemistry Council, and became a Member of the Global Research Management Board, before acting in 2003 as the Global Head of Chemistry of the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research until his move to ETH Zurich in July 2003.
Prof. Altmann has held posts at Cornell University in New York, United States and the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. He was a Member of the Novartis Pharma Research Management Board. While at Novartis Pharma AG, he received the “Novartis Leading Scientist Award”. Prof. Altmann has published and lectured extensively in area of the chemical synthesis and the biological and pharmacological profiling of biologically active natural products and their synthetic and semi-synthetic analogs. Prof. Altmann was awarded a Doctorate from the University of Basel in 1986 for his work in Peptide Chemistry.
